Having authority without being authoritarian

Build legitimate, consistent management authority that empowers people, without authoritarianism.

Visuel de la conférence Avoir de l’autorité sans être autoritaire

Management approach

Obedience has always sparked vigorous debate. Why do we sometimes comply with a request or order that conflicts with our values or views, even when we are not obliged to? This form of obedience has no place in companies: it benefits neither managers, who cannot question their practices, nor employees, who comply without understanding and cannot develop.

How can managerial authority exist without authoritarianism? What helps managers lead through explanation and trust? Drawing on these questions and Stanley Milgram’s original experiment, the talk proposes a healthy management approach built on legitimacy, consistency and accountability.

Part 1 · Obedience has run its course

  • Why management requires explanation and learning

Part 2 · Stanley Milgram’s original experiment

Part 3 · Lessons for management

  • Why and how can we develop non-authoritarian authority?
  • How can managers be reasonably legitimate, consistent and empowering?
